This project, a collaboration between John Kennedy (Landlab) and Christian Barnes (Vista Projects), will be the first artwork commissioned by the Helix Trust at the start of an ambitious programme of regeneration. It will form part of a suite of projects that together aim to raise the status and community value of the land between Falkirk and Grangemouth.
Christian and John are working with community representatives from Falkirk (Bainsford and Langlees) to recruit a designer to make a giant earthwork consisting of 45,000 cubic tonnes of material. The Helix project has been awarded a £25 million grant by The Big Lottery Fund as part of its Living Landmarks Programme for a total of 313 entries. Barnes and Kennedy collaborated to provide one of a number of consultancy reports that secured the award for Falkirk. Significant funding and land has also been committed by Falkirk Council and British Waterways Scotland. Total phase one development costs are expected to be in the region of £43 million. The project is being driven by a partnership of Falkirk Council, British Waterways Scotland and Central Scotland Forest Trust through the Helix Trust.
