2016 Wet Sleddale to Oddendale

Wet Sleddale to Oddendale. A boxed folio of 20 printed photographs on card.

I’m working on a project about Wet Sleddale and the currently flooded quarry at Hardendale. Two man-made waterbodies on either side of the M6 near Shap in Cumbria. One made on purpose in a landscape that is managed as a water catchment and the other a consequence of quarrying. Both are situated in passage of landscape of extraordinary quality which has recently again been excluded from designation as a National Park and whose history of ownership and use challenges the narratives of value upon which designation depends.

This project has been produced in response to an invitation from Highlights Rural Touring to contribute to ‘Paper Scissors Book’, Contemporary Craft Tour, Northumberland, Cumbria and Durham. The work is linked to my other project the Bathymetric Atlas of the English Lake District which will be showing at Blackwell the Arts and Crafts House in Bowness on Windermere at the same time.

The photographs are concerned with the geology and hydrology specific to this area and its history of use and occupation.

This is an area near my home where I regularly walk and I have been taking photographs of it for years. I think of the folio as a book whose pages are not bound together and which can be re-ordered by others. An exhibition in a box if you like. The project is basically a commitment to make four more boxes of 20 photographs, each set of photographs will be different and some may not have been made yet. Each is for sale at £660 including VAT. If you would like to buy or commission one please contact me.
